As a transfer student, Kellie Coleman knew it would be tough transitioning to a new school. To help make new friends, she decided to branch out of her comfort zone and join the Tempe12. She was attracted to the great opportunity of what being a 12 had to offer, as well as the prospective of networking and meeting a ton of great people.

Why did you want to be a 12 girl?
It’s hard to pinpoint the exact reason as to why I wanted to become a Tempe 12 girl but the opportunity and experience that Tempe 12 offers to me is what I was attracted to most. Also, I thought it would be a great way to make new friends, especially because I transferred to ASU from UofA and I only have a select few friends that attend ASU from my high school.
What do you want to be when you grow up, how will being a 12 help?
My dream job would be working for a television station, either reporting on the scene or behind the scenes. If that doesn’t work out I would love to be an event planner or promoter. I think being a part of Tempe 12 will help me break out of my shell and get me to become more outgoing and learn promoting skills!
Tell us something that people wouldn’t expect from just looking at you?
From looking at me, people would have never guessed that I used to play basketball competitively and I almost went to college to play basketball. My senior year of high school I was looking at schools to play and talking to coaches. I ended up getting burnt out and wanted to start a new life away from basketball.
Favorite place on campus?
To be honest, I don’t have an exact favorite place on campus because I just transferred but I have been to the Memorial Union before and their food is pretty yummy. It’s a great place to sit down and relax between classes as well.
What’s your major and how did you decide on that?
My major is Journalism/ Communication. I actually couldn’t decide on one of them so I picked both! I love to write and read. Investigative journalism also intrigues me because reporters will literally do anything to get a good story and I find that fascinating! I also chose Communication because I feel like it’s a good general major that I can do a lot with!
Best trip you have ever taken?
The best trip I have ever taken was when I went to Hawaii for 11 days with my best friend in High School! I’ve never been to a place that amazing for that long and I never wanted it to end! My skin wanted it to end though, I got a little too much sun that vacation.
How have things changed since you became a 12?
Things have definitely changed after becoming a Tempe 12. I’ve met so many amazing people through it and have gained friends. I can’t wait to start doing more events with everyone! It’s also changed my eating and working out habits for the better, hehe.
Favorite college memory?
My favorite college memory would have to be spring break of my sophomore year at UA. Basically the entire school rented houses on the boardwalk of mission beach in California and we had a blast! Everyone got together and it was just an amazing spring break and I will never forget it!
What do you look for in a guy?
I look for personality in a guy and someone that can joke around with me because I am a very sarcastic person! I also love a guy that can hold a conversation because it shows me that he is interested. Looks wise I always look at the smile first and then the eyes. He also has to be athletic!
Tell us about your best and worst date?
I have never really had a bad date, other than spilling ice water all over myself when I was out to dinner with my boyfriend. That was pretty embarrassing but he enjoyed it. I would have to say my best date was when I went to the melting pot! I’m very laidback and we decided to dress up and go somewhere really nice. It was amazing and romantic. Also the food was bomb!!
Why did you decide on ASU?
I decided to transfer to ASU because I know it would be easier for me to be closer to where my family lives (Scottsdale) and to be honest I was a tad sick of Tucson! Ssshhh don’t tell!
Tell us about where you grew up?
I grew up on the suburban side in a huge neighborhood in Minnesota! I loved every second of it and was always riding bikes or swimming. I miss Minnesota a lot, but not the winter time.
What’s one item you can’t live without and why?
This is cliché but I could not live without my phone. I always need to be talking to somebody and my phone has everything on it, music, internet and pictures. I would feel naked without it!
